So here we are, Black Friday. I think it finds the nation in an unusual mood after the tiering announcements yesterday but in many ways they give us more of a reason to support Black Friday than ever because for some retailers, and in particular small ones, it’s a last gasp that will give them the cashflow to keep going a little longer. When the announcement was made I listened to Mr MC with his President’s hat on, talking to local businesses on Zoom. You see we sit within a seven mile radius of three different counties and for many here, the geographical opening of a family business three generations ago now dictates the extent of their operations. Ironically the infection rate in our Tier 3 areas is far lower than that in Tier 2. We are surrounded by heartache and for some, the traction on their Black Friday offering will dictate their survival over the next weeks and months.
So if you are somebody who dismisses Black Friday then this year I urge you to rethink. My strategy is to offset every purchase I make from a big retailer this Christmas with one from a small one. Each transaction you make is a vote for survival for whichever store you choose, even if it’s a big one. And don’t automatically dismiss Amazon – at the moment for some small retailers without the budget to optimise a website that will appear high in Google search it’s a lifeline, bringing them sales that they otherwise quite simply would have no hope of.
