It’s slightly terrifying that we’ve reached the end of season sales already isn’t it? And it’s always significant when John Lewis launch theirs because they fire the starting gun for the rest of the retail industry. There’s a lot to plough through this year. The bad weather may have made us all grumpy for the last few weeks but it does mean that there are great buys to be had – some are reductions but the real gems are in clearance. So I’ve spent hours spent scouring the outer reaches of the website so that you can come and shop the John Lewis sale with me. I’m going to chat through the offers that I think are really worth looking at.

I’ll start with some of the pieces that I’ve included in my edits this season because I know I can wholeheartedly recommend them. This navy jacket is very similar to the iconic Betty from Sezane and it’s now just £35 but you’ll have to be quick, it’s selling fast.

The t-shirt that I was wearing here is also in the sale and I’ve just bought it – it has half length sleeves which are perfect for the crazy hot/cold weather we’re having. And the jeans are there too – I know quite a few of you are fans of this straight cut so here’s the nod that they’re in clearance if you’re quick.

While we’re on the subject of jeans, if you prefer a boyfriend cut these are great and they’re in clearance now as well. The button fly is a good feature for visually breaking up the expanse of your hips.

If you like your jeans looser, this puddle cut is reduced to clear as well.

This wool blend jacket so loved by fashion editors is now half price and the trousers too although there are only a few sizes left as I type.

The short cotton twill jumpsuit that I tried on a few weeks ago is in clearance along with the denim version here if you prefer a darker colour.

Short jumpsuit

There’s also this one which comes with both short sleeves or long sleeves here – just incredible value.

And thinking ahead to cooler days, the soft knit jumper that I bought to cheer myself up in dark February is in clearance, also available in a beautiful bright blue, purple and burgundy.

Moving back to summer, there are more than 4,000 styles of dress to choose from here in the sale but this is the one I’ve picked out as being great value. It’s made from cool linen but it still has structure.

And this is such a flattering t-shirt shape with its wide neck that isn’t too deep, made from slub cotton it’s casual and perfect for holidays.

The fabulous vests that I’ve been raving about all season with their flattering cutaway arms are in the sale – four colours available and don’t forget it’s just as cool to wear them with an unbuttoned shirt over the top for a 2024 look. I particularly like this denim blue because it’ll create such a lean column look if you wear it with jeans.

Racer vest

I love the sporty stripe sleeve detail on this sweatshirt and tried it on in store – I decided I’d need an XS because I’d want to wear it with wide jeans and it comes up so big. To wear it with a slim jean I’d go for a small. It’s in clearance now and also available in a bright poppy red. NB it’s described as a jumper but it’s definitely a cotton sweatshirt.

There are lots of swimwear reductions here but these two-pack bikinis are particularly good. Top tip from reader Lisa – if you’re going to a festival or somewhere similarly casual, wear a bikini top like this instead of a bra under a t-shirt for a pop of colour – it’s also a good way of getting around any difficulty with a racer vest.

Beachwear is in clearance too (you can see it all here) and this cotton kaftan is my favourite – it’s just the right length with a good amount of waftiness for going from beach to bar.

Sale is a good time to refurbish your pyjama drawer and lots of it is reduced to clear here. Actually I’m thinking that these would be good to put away for presents for later in the year.

The offers on sportswear are incredible – I guess so many of us stocked up over lockdown that we haven’t needed to buy any for a while. Anyway I’m flagging this not only for runners/gym people but also for all of the dog walkers and golfers out there. I have these jackets in a few colours and they’re great on their own for cooler days but they also layer really well in winter. I can’t believe they’re so heavily discounted – less than half of the original price. I’m showing you the black but it’s also available in bright blue or pine green.

Lightweight jacket

I have this version too – it’s a bit longer, less figure hugging and it has a packable hood. Again it’s less than half price and there’s an even bigger discount on the pink. In terms of sizing, I find M is bang on for a size 12.

The offers are just as good on my favourite gym leggings if you’re quick. I really don’t need any more but I do wear them three days a week and I’m wondering if I can justify adding these to my collection.

And then as far as clothes are concerned, I’m going to finish with the shoe of dreams that I hadn’t spotted until now. Lots of you ask me about the low silver slingbacks that I wear a lot, I’ve had them for years but here they are in gold. I have a pair of gold heels but these are so much nicer – walkable, wearable, timeless elegance… reduced to clear… and I can’t stop thinking about them.

Bedding

I’m starting with back to university which is on my mind as the youngest gets the keys to his new house in Leeds next week. It will be the very last ‘back to…’ for us which is hard to believe. Those of you who have students will know that their bedding needs replacing quite regularly because it doesn’t come out of the student laundry system very well. This reversible duvet cover with its two different looks is a great buy for any student, teen or guest bedroom. I’ve gone for the bright stripes which are also available in a yellow colourway but there are other options including florals here.

Pure cotton reversible duvet cover and pillowcases

I’m adding a knitted cotton throw because they’re very important for hangover days or just evenings in poorly heated student digs. There are lots of other throws reduced to clear here.

If you’re looking for something a little more design-led, some of The Design Project is in clearance including this duvet set which is half price.

Some of the fabulous Mini Moderns sets are in clearance too.

Furniture

When it comes to furniture there are lots of bargains to be found on lines that are being discontinued (find them all here) but the best has to be found in the clearance of the lovely cherry range of JL furniture – sideboards, chairs, shelving units and this bedside table.

Home accessories

There are lots of cushions in clearance, some are my absolute favourites and the ones I have in our Newcastle apartment so I’m guessing that JL have a big homeware launch ahead.

The gold toned one here comes in five different colourways but the burnishing really adds light to a dark corner. Now half price.

This chevron option is a striking centrepiece for a bank of neutral cushions, even though they do all end up on the floor in a house like mine.

The diminishing squares is the one I have in orange and it’s fat and soft, just how an expensive cushion should be. Now half price.

These mirrored trays are perfect for coffee table curation – I have the larger one with plants and candles on it and they really pick up the glow of the flame, now in clearance.

It seems as though some of the wonderful True Grace fragrance lines are being discontinued including Fig. They’re at half price and they make indulgent gifts – or treats for yourself. You can see the full range of clearance fragrances here.

Still thinking about gifts (I’m not going to mention December) but there do seem to suddenly be a lot of weddings and silver weddings popping up. This Alessi bowl is in clearance at half price…

… and so are these sculptural candlesticks.

And again, thinking ahead a little bit – there is a clearance of games and puzzles going on too, you can find them all here. This is a great game for anyone over 10 – now half price.

And so hopefully that’s been enough inspiration for now and got across the point that there are some great value reductions to be discovered. I’ll leave you to browse but I wish you could shop the John Lewis sale with me in real life – that would be quite a day out!

I’ll just finish with a picture from last weekend to update the one that I ended last week’s post with – here it is as a reminder…

… and here they are exactly 20 years later.

The sun came out for a little while so we managed to have our Father’s Day/ 20th house anniversary barbecue even if it did cloud over. It was all very simple but definitely one of the high points of the year for me. It reminded me once again that all you need is your people… and it makes it extra special if you don’t have them very often I guess.

This makes me laugh because the youngest looks about as perplexed as he did in his first birthday photo above – there’s always one who pulls a face!

Ok, that’s it, I’ll leave you to shop. There will be a post on Tuesday next week and then that’s it for a little while. As we’re not going away on holiday this summer I’m hoping to use the time to do a bit of thinking. It’s time to make some changes to my work, my life and in particular to Midlifechic so I need to step back for a while.

I want to work on the community aspect of Midlifechic so that we can be in touch more frequently. I’m imagining a virtual midlife cafe that you can pop in and out of for a chat. I’d also like to build resources on the nitty gritty of style and other things that I’ve been noticing going down well with you recently. And of course as well as thinking through how to do that, I need to try to start writing a book.

We won’t lose touch completely – there will be posts over the weeks ahead but they’re likely to be shorter ‘midlife lately’ catch-ups and explanations of any changes ahead before we get that new term feeling in the autumn. If you haven’t already, now might be a good time to sign up for emails so that you know when I’ve written something. I’m adding the subscription box just below, it’s free and it just means that notification of a post will land in your Inbox. In the meantime have a wonderful weekend, thank you for reading as always and see you on Tuesday.
