Simple gifts for men 2025 – by request

In response to my surprise post on Tuesday a couple of messages came in lamenting the fact that I wasn’t planning on doing as many gift posts this year – particularly the gift ideas for men. And we all know why – men are hard to buy for. As a mum of boys I’m very aware that from the moment they’re born most of them want to ‘do’ rather than ‘have’. Over the years I’ve come up with so many different ideas but the shops this year are short on new things. They’re de-risking, avoiding any opportunistic buys that might end up in the sale bins in January and ‘new’ is thin on the ground. So today I’m going to give you some ideas for good things that the men in your life will appreciate – simple gifts for men 2025 – there’s very little whimsy, just solid recommendation.

And because this isn’t what I was planning to do this year it’s a post of two halves. So just imagine that you’re coming out on a shopping trip with me and then when we get home we sit by the fire with a cup of mulled wine and share a story. Let’s put some of the magic back into Christmas between now and the big day.

1. Airbnb giftcard

The gift of travel is always a joy to receive but it’s hard to choose something for somebody else because we all have our own pernickety likes and dislikes. An easy way to gift travel is with an Airbnb gift card, that way the recipient can choose whether to use it in the UK or abroad. And if the man you’re buying for is YOUR man all the better – hopefully you’ll be invited along. You can either buy a digital card or a physical one – if you want a real giftcard to give, you can buy one here. Alternatively you can buy an Airbnb ecard here. Once the balance is added to the person’s Airbnb account there’s no expiry date.

2. Ryanair giftcard

A great gift for a student who can’t afford to go away. This will give them the opportunity to make a plan for their breaks – pair it with the Airbnb giftcard for the ultimate treat.

3. The Rolls Royce of boxers

Said by many to be the best boxers you can buy, they’re sweat-wicking, fast-drying and made from modal derived from sustainably managed forests. The fabric is soft, breathable and they have what is said to be a super-comfortable ergonomic pouch! Two lengths and nine colours available.

4. A more hard-wearing boxer

The only problem with the boxers above is that they are a luxurious fabric so they don’t last as long as others. These are also highly rated but have been difficult to buy in the UK until now. They’ve trademarked their ‘Stop Drop’ technology AND ‘BallPark Pouch’ which makes the mind boggle but apparently results in comfort and longevity in one. Various colours and prints available here.

Currently 20% off for Black Friday.

5. Refillable aftershave atomiser

The best (and most cost effective) way for him to travel with his favourite aftershave and it’s so easy to refill. Lowest price here – five colours available and free delivery.

Currently 25% off for Black Friday.

6. Styptic pencil

A great little stocking filler for anyone who has a tendency to cut themselves shaving – an old fashioned skin saver.

7. Super Scottish Socks

Probably the loveliest socks, designed by Alice who was determined to confound the Scottish weather. She now runs her small but highly thought of brand which is dedicated to sock supremacy. Lots of colours, wools and knits available.

8. Everyday socks

Not quite so special but the socks that will be a pleasure to wear with trainers simply because they’re believed to be the best everyday sports socks around. I have them in smaller sizes in lots of colours – a great little stocking filler.

9. The best simple tees

There’s such a difference between a good t-shirt and a bad one and it’s great when men pay the same kind of attention to fit as we do. A t-shirt with no texture and wide flappy sleeves is a way of saying, ‘I’ve given up.’ This cut with its ribbed finish and well set sleeve is great for every day – it makes such a difference. 9 colours available.

10. Advanced tees

The equivalent of our ‘jeans and a nice top’, the textured t-shirt is a fundamental drinks in the pub/ hitting the dance floor option. The honeycomb texture on these plus the grip on the biceps gives standout to the most seemingly unthought-through outfit. 4 colours available with tipping (see picture), 5 colours in plain knit here.

11. Millennial trousers

While we’re on the subject of clothes for men, I asked the youngest because I knew he’d had a panic when he went to Miami to work for Messi. A dress code was sent over that stipulated low key glamour and no logos other than Adidas (Messi’s sponsor). However he knew where to go and he tells me these are some of the best trousers he bought.

12. Jeans

He and his friends also rate these jeans really highly – you can’t beat JW Anderson for attention to cut. 5 colours available.

13. Pared down jacket

And the last suggestion from him is the piece I really love seeing him in – this timeless, ageless jacket. He has it in brown, it matches his eyes but I really like the navy too.

14. Non-glossy lip balm

The fuss over lip balm that’s too shiny – I don’t know whether you live with that? This cult American one is finally available over here, it’s made for men, it’s matte and super moisturising.

15. Men’s beauty box

This is a seriously lovely curation of products with contents worth £295. A great way to make someone feel seen and valued.

16. The best jeans belts

You wouldn’t expect this to be the best place to buy belts but it’s like a little secret nook. The men’s selection is much nicer than the women’s and it’s a great place to buy suede belts like this which are hard to find. They also have smooth leather jeans belts with great buckles. All a great price.

17. Good lower calorie/alcohol wine & beer

This is for anyone who like me loves wine but finds that wine no longer loves them. It’s a lower alcohol selection and as you’d imagine, the whites are good, the reds sometimes lack the heft of one with higher alcohol but they’re fine if you like your reds light and fruity.

They also have low sugar and even keto collections – and a selection of skinny beers as well. The extra benefit is that lower alcohol means fewer calories too so it’s a win:win.

18. Merry stocking fillers

All the rage at the moment and they come from a woman-led company. If you’re looking for little stocking fillers these go down a treat with the youth (and me). Pre-mixed cocktails in a faux tennis ball, much better value than the standard cocktail tins too. Currently on a Black Friday offer.

18. Best biscuits in the world

There’s nothing on the planet like a Toffolossus biscuit – they’re pricey so just for Christmas in our house but I think about them all year round. And you can keep the tin and use it for spaghetti until the time for a refill comes!

18. More best biscuits in the world

And now I’ve seen these and just had to include them. Even when we worked at Selfridges we knew this was the best Food Hall in the UK, it’s just unbeatable and I have no connection with it other than an old colleague being in charge of the glorious window displays – which makes me very proud.

So I hope that’s given you a few ideas when it comes to simple gifts for men 2025. There are some strong Black Friday discounts that have started this week too – you’ll find them here:

Now let’s change the mood. Remember our shopping trip? Well we’re back home now… and you’ll see that Mal’s been busy illustrating… kindly leaving my wrinkles out… or maybe that’s the soft glow of the firelight!

Tales of Christmases gone by

Nikki Garnett, Midlifechic

So we’re back at my place, we’ve kicked off our shoes and we’re chatting away in front of the fire. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin.

You see it's been feeling very Christmassy in our house this week, the -5C temperatures have forced us into the front of the house where we can light these roaring fires. While I've been sitting on the sofa in the evenings researching this post, we've been talking about what really makes a good Christmas, thinking back to our favourite childhood memories and even though we've heard them lots of times before I can never resist a good story… so this is one of Mal's.

Growing up in the North East in the 70s and 80s was tough, far tougher than at my side of the country. Mal comes from a family of miners and I think all of us who were in the UK at that time will remember just how hard life was for them in the Thatcher years.

Mal was the youngest of six – five boys and one girl and he and his brothers shared a bedroom, all stacked up in bunks like sailors on a ship. This is the only photo we have of him as a little boy (and everybody always says our middle one looks just like me but my goodness he was so like Mal when he was little).

Anyway back to our story. Christmas for Mal was a stocking at the end of the bed and all it contained was a tangerine, a few sweets and some nuts… plus lumps of coal of course for anyone who'd been naughty. But his memories are still happy ones and they all revolve around people because as part of a huge Geordie family the house was always full, particularly because his mum worked for the Scottish and Newcastle Brewery and their Christmas bonus was as much Newcastle Brown Ale as they could take home – and she was never short of helpers!

He has two distinct memories of Christmas as a little boy and this is one, I'll save the other for another post. At the end of one particularly tough year for Newcastle when the miners were losing their jobs and the shipyards were closing, the brewery declared that it was going to throw a big Christmas party for the children of everyone who worked there. But when the names started coming in and they saw the size of Geordie families they quickly announced that each member of staff could bring just one child along.

What a conundrum it must have been for Mal's mum… a bit like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory… but in the end, he, as the youngest, was the chosen one. And every time we walk past the building which is now part of Newcastle University he tells me about just how magnificent it felt just for once to be the special one… and to have a day out… with his mum. On his own!

He tells me how it felt to go into the magnificent building, clutching her hand…

… with its tiled interiors which were like nothing he'd ever seen before…

… to find tables piled high with food: sandwiches, cakes, trifles and jellies, biscuits and sweets… as much as you could eat and more. And there was fizzy pop… and party games… and everyone joined in even though they'd never met each other before… and he played and danced and wished the day would never end.

And that's Christmas isn't it?

It doesn't have to be a whole month of plenty. Sometimes Christmas feels all the more special for just being one treasured day – and that day doesn't have to be Christmas Day itself.

It isn't the presents which so often now are the whole focus. It's the precious time spent with precious people who for once have stopped being absorbed by their ever-busy lives. It's about letting your hair down together, playing games, sharing memories, remembering the bonds formed so long ago. Those abiding bonds make it feel so important to see those very people, maybe not on Christmas Day but at some point over the Christmas period.

Sadly not all of them will still be with us and one of the wistful sides of Christmas can be facing up to that. But others still are and so we should try to look forward and treasure our time with them. I always think that these particular bonds tell you exactly who has a place in your inner circle. They're the people you want to catch up with in December because if you don't manage to see them then it isn't really Christmas.

So I'll leave you with that thought while you're busy doing your shopping. Christmas can be anything you want it to be but it can't be everything – so choose carefully and give your time to the right people. If you possibly can, say no to the things you don't want to do and yes to whatever brings you pleasure.

And on that very note of pleasure I must rush to get ready because I'm going out with my favourite Christmas party person tonight (you know who that is!). We're very excited, we've had tickets for this event for over a year and it's finally here. And as it happens it isn't so far away from the scene of Mal's first big Christmas party so let's hope it matches up. I'll tell you more when we have our midlife lately catch-up but until then… happy and careful festive planning everyone.
